In the daytime in weekdays in the city centre of tromsø, there are no free parking options, but in the evening and weekend you will be able to find some free parking spaces, Every parking space or area has signs specifically depicting the times you need to pay for parking and when parking is free.

Parking Checklist

1. Check parking space signs.
2. Check parking space rules.
3. Pay your parking.

1. Check parking space signs

1. Check parking space signs

There are 2 types of parking signs:

Blue means general parking rules apply:
• Paid parking 0800 – 1700 on weekdays
• 0800 – 1500 on Saturdays
• Sundays and evenings: Free, unless otherwise stated

White means dedicated times and prices:
• Will be stated on the App, machine or on the sign behind or hanging below.

2. Check parking space regulations

If you are using roadside parking, schedule and cost for parking will be stated under the blue or white parking sign and on the parking meter/vending machine.

If you are parking in a tunnel/outside parking area, schedule and cost will be stated on the sign at the entrance and also on the vending/parking machine.

There is usually a restriction in how long you are allowed to park, for instance 1 or 2 hours which will be stated on the sign and machine.

So first check the sign and then what it says on the machine.

If you are using the app you won’t be allowed to pay parking for more than the max-time, and this goes for the machines as well.

The max-time is usually the reason if your payment is rejected by the machine or app, so look for the max time.

Free parking zones

Even though not in abundance, there are some options for free parking.

• Areas outside the city centre (5–10 min walk) often have free or cheaper parking

• Some hotels offer free parking — check with your accommodation

• Tromsø Island (where most things are located) has side streets with 2-4 hour free parking but spots are limited. You can check this map and click the green locators for free parking time frames and max-times.

Tips for parking & driving in Tromsø

• Make sure your vehicle is properly within the lines of your parking space. It can be given a fine or towed away if outside or on the line of your space.

• It is not allowed to “park” with blinkers/emergency lights on for a short while on the sidewalk. This kind of interference in traffic, is only reserved for people in life and death situations and is penalized accordingly.

• In Norway we use blinkers when you have trouble with your vehicle, need assistance or are transporting people that need medical help. You will also see it used to blink one or two times to thank drivers being courteous.

• Remember to place your handicap parking card visible in the front window when using a handicap parking space. Rules for handicap parking you can find here.

• Mark your GPS or make a note of where you have parked so you don’t forget 🙂
